i got an angelfish today, and one of his ventral fins seems to be stuck/clamped to his side, while the other one is fine. other than this, he's completely healthy and active. could this be an injury from maybe being netted at the store or putting him in the tank, or is this a defect? if it's an injury, is there any way to possibly help him out a little bit? i'm sure it's not comfortable.

It apears he does have a defect of some sort. I can't say if that is due to poor genetics or injury. If he isn't bothered by it, it probably isn't a recent injury. That could have happened when he was very young and more fragile.

Personally if I found that in a batch of baby angels I wouldn't have sent it off to be sold. Part of keeping any animal is good husbandry practices that ensure defects don't enter the gene pool.

He probably isn't in any discomfort over it, and you can enjoy haveing him as a pet. I wouldn't let any of his offspring live though because of not knowing if that is genetic or environmental in cause.
