angel fish kissing

Lip locking is normally a courtship ritual with spawning pairs. You will also occasionaly see it in non-mated pairs.
If they start cleaning off a leaf and chasing the other fish away from 'their corner' it's a sure bet you'll see eggs.
good luck
:)

my angels are kissing too

hi
I have two angels that have laid eggs before, but never came babies from them/.
Lately they have been kissing each other on the mouth.
But they have been kissing so much that they are doing harm to their mouths. actually some cotton fungus is beginning to grow in their mouths. is this common? does it mean something? should I do something?
thanks

betty- i'd say both fighting and mating... in true cichlid fashion, it can get pretty rough.

mamijose- i'd say that the reason you have no babies is that either one of the angels or one of their tankmates is eating the eggs. a noctural type would be the first suspect.

on the cottony stuff, its probably a secondary infection from the liplocking. the cottony stuff is a fungus, and should probably be treated. if you have a quaranteen tank, get it ready. if you don't, then you have to decide if you want to treat with an anti-fungal medication. the infection is going to continue to stress the fish, and possibly infect others.

mamijose, you are probably best served by starting your own thread and posting all the information you have on your tank. (gallons, inhabitants, any water chemistry tests you can...)

mamijose- just doublechecked my info... cotton mouth is caused by a bacterial infection. treatment should include a broad-spectrum antibiotic.

i appologize for the mis-information.

Indigess thanks for your answer. Did you see the attached picture of my fish?
I have a 26 gallon tank with two angel fish, full grown, and a plecostomus, small one. (it used to be more crowded, but I recently lost my golden gourami, and three small chinese algae eaters)
I have this aquarium from more than 5 years ago, and one of the angels has that age, he's one of the first fish I bought.
I have been having algae problems lately.
I wonder if the cotton mouth can be treated with gentian violet? I have used it on my fish with great success. I also have treated them with fungus cure before. I find that the local gentian violet applied to the fish, works best, but I have never use it on the mouth.
what do you suggest?
thanks

if it is indeed 'cotton mouth' it is bacterial in nature and gentian violet will not be effective. you can try it if you want, but i don't think it will work if we have effectively diagnosed the disease.

it appears to be quite contagious once its gets a foothold in the aquarium. i would probably treat the tank with a good antibiotic, like MelaFix. MelaFix is a good choice as many use it with little compromise to the biofilter. the main active ingredient is tea tree oil.

any broad spectrum antibiotic intended for aquarium use should be fine, though. i think i mentioned earlier that you might consider getting a med that includes both an antifungal and an antibiotic, but i think an antibiotic will do the trick.

just make sure you follow the instructions to the letter... a large waterchange before you dose is never a bad idea.

good luck.
