Hi everyone I am new to the forum. Well the problem I am having now is with my Angelfish. I have had my aquarium for about 4 months now and the Angelfish for just as long. It's a 20g freshwater tank and I tested my water and everythings fine. The only thing that has changed is that I added a new 65 watt compact fluorescent lighting system to replace my old 15 watt one. Usually it would be the first to come up to eat, and it still is but after it eats the food it tries to swallow but spits it back out. I am just wondering what might be wrong because I had a gourami that did that before and it died after a few weeks of not eating..

Have you changed the diet or food?

My fish (gouramis, platies, etc) do it often when the food flakes are too big.

Yeah, I have five and they are all messy eaters. My Rummy Nose Tetras and the Rams have to clean up after them all the time.

Just a random thought... did you get the food when you got the tank four months ago? Fish food does get old and stale; my fish start to ignore it or spit it out after a few months. I buy new food at least every six months, but sometimes sooner for just this reason.

Ive heard thats how fish bite off pieces, My black tetras do it and its quite normal. They break of a chunk each time they suck it in and spit it back out, try crumbling the flakes smaller if its bothering you, dont worry im sure it isnt serious as long as it eventually gets the flake down.

Hey everyone thanks for all the feedback. BUT I have not to worry anymore because when I got home today it was eating normal again. I guess it was being picky because maybe some of the food might be stale. BUT I never thought about that though, I always thought the flakes would last quite a bit.
Do you guys buy really small containers of flakes or pellets? I think it is a good idea since it doesn't waste food, plus I use 2 types of frozen food and one FD so the flakes don't get used up that fast.

BTW what kind of foods do you guys use? I see so much variety and would like to try different foods for my fish, and it seems Hikari always attracts me with nice packaging :D . I used to feed them some mosquito larvea, but then the hole full of water was filled with a tree..

i used to have alot of mosquito larve around my house! want some?

I buy the smallests size available, and feed a wide variety. I almost never get through an entire container, because I replace the food every few months. There's a list of everything I'm currently feeding in my specs - I try to use a few basics regularly and feed things like bloodworms, daphnia, krill, etc. once a week or so.
I'm glad your angel is eating again :)

treat your angel and rams to some freeze dried brine shrimp once in a while or freeze dried tubifex worms - i buy the hikari brand and my fish love the change of pace food it's a good treat - also i dont think you can buy a better food than new life spectrum small community fish formula the stuff is incredible (it's my fish regular food) it brings out colors like no other food and my fish go nuts for this stuff moreso than any other food - it is a semi floating granule - it's great it you can find it
