Angels afraid of the light

I have 3 angels in my 55G, and the lighting is 4 x CFL bulbs (at the moment 4 x 26W, but probably going to change to 4 x 15W). I rarely have the light on as I have no real plants in the tank, but anytime I put the lights on the fish hide in the back.

Are they just simply not used to the light being on? I want to eventually get real plants in the tank, and so the lights will be on for a longer period of time, but I don't want to stress the fish out.

Should I start by leaving the light on for about an hour a day and get them used to it being on? I plan to get some floating plants to provide shade, so they will have areas to hide, and also hope to get a bunch of easy to care for but tall plants.

Any suggestions? the 4 x rummy nose in there are not bothered by the light at all, and as far as I can tell neither are the cory cats (but they spend most of the day hiding anyway and only come out in the evening/morning and at feeding time).

Thanks.

how much cover is in the tank. angels like tall cover..driftwood and tall plants. etc

they will get use to the light...but they prefer low light or shade/cover.

I was going to post these in the DIY section (may still do that) asking for input on how to arrange the tank. But will post them here so you have an idea of how the tank looks. These are taken with only 1 light on. Let me know if you have any suggestions on how to re-arrange things.

The area to the right of the tall piece of driftwood is usually where 2 of the angels will hang out. The other spends a lot of its time on the other side of the tank, as you can see from the pictures they don't like the light :(

I think that floating plants will help, just need to get around to buying them and hope they survive.

they will adapt to the light.. I have 230 watts over my 75 and the angel and discus in this tank are fine.

as long as there is structure they will be fine.

I have floating plants in many of my tanks..the angels will hang under it.

Yeah, Angels do prefer subdued lighting. I have a lot of frogbit, hornwort, and duckweed floating that creates a lot of shade in certain spots. You can have a lot of that for cheap when you are ready to go live.
