Gee, I've been watching my angels.....they seem to be getting a bit paunchy, their vent areas look a bit swollen, but not too much so.......I've noticed that it looks like someone has been cleaning of the gunk from one of my filter tubes too.....not that I've actually seen them do this, but I have noticed it's been ....son of a gun....I just turned around and saw one of the angels blowing off the tube.....hhmm.......

Gosh, I hope these two don't turn ugly on me....I've got a nice blue ram in there along with 5 pristella tetras...and.............no other tank to put them in...

Oh well....have to see how this pans out....I have no idea what sex these two are...could be two females for all I know...guess I'm not really asking for advice, just logging an observation....and I'm bored with nothing to do tonight...hehe...maybe I'll take a couple of pics...just because...

Can you see their "bits"? I've seen my angels spawn and when my pair get in the mood it becomes quite obvious which gender is which. The female ovipositer is blunt and will become extended and red when she is getting ready to lay eggs. The male bit is pointy and quite a bit less pronounced. I've heard that the male id is much more questionable--and that sometimes one female will be ready to spawn and the other female will play the part--but no fertile eggs.

My angels do keep the other fish to one side of the tank when they spawn, but no actual physical damage, just a little warning lunge.

Sometimes it just takes longer for them to find a spot they like--mine can clean lots of plants before returning to their favorite sword.

Yeah, I know about the "bits" lol....from the rams I have. I figured that fish anatamy is pretty similar so I was going to try and see if there were any differences in the "bits"....lol

At the moment they aren't extended enough to tell. One of them is a gold marble, the other is a koi. Very pretty fish, if they are a pair and they spawn...their fry should turn out quite nicely...I would hope

but......I took down the 20hex I was going to use for an angel fry tank if I ever got any. Replaced that space with a sw quaranteen....oh well....

a pic of the pair (not one of my best pics)...and...my nice blue ram......

OK, dumb question...

Where are the "bits"? In front of the anal fin?

Got 4 Koi type who have split up into 2 groups on either side of the tank. One on the right side will go into a defensive posture (shaking and jumping towards the other 2) if they get close, so I'm assuming they are a soon to be mated pair (and maybe the other two likewise)

the 'bits' breeding tubes are in front of the anal fin.

the females tube will start showing before they actuallyspawn.

it is very distinct..you will see a blunt nub show up shortly before the spawn. some of my female angels willl 'show' for a couple days.

they will usually spar a bit and chase any intruders from the spawn site.

they may clean several spots prior tp spawning.

just keep an eye out.

if this is their first spawn..there are a couple things that could happen.

you have time..so don;t fret..even after they lay eggs :)

My pair show their bits pretty constantly--but if they aren't showing very well then you ought to have some time before they get their act together.

I think the one on the bottom in the pic is the male, and yes they are getting ready to spawn..They will become aggressive to everything in the tank. Chasing them away from there "nest" and possibly fighting til death. JUst keep an eye on them, one resort could be to remove the eggs if aggression gets to much.

OK, took a peek last night (feel like a voyeaur!), nothing that I can see. Fishies are still young, only about 2 inches in body height (not including the fins).

Oh! Also sorry for the semi-hijack of this thread...
