Angels in Odds or Evens

Go fish yourself.
I want to know people's opinions on keeping angels together.

What do you think about keeping them in odd numbers vs. even numbers?

I keep 4 angels because I was told they like to pair up, and you should have an even number so that no one is scapegoated.

I'd like to reduce to 3 but not if it means one of them is going to be harrassed.

Odds..no explanation other than that is what I have always seen and has been recommended.

more experienced fish keepers I know recommend keeping an odd number with angels.

I am sure they have a reason.

ultimately, it is really going to depend partly on tank size and if you get a pair forming.
if this happens, all best are off, unless you have a really large tank.

other things to consider are extremely aggressive angels(typically I have seen this with the males)
in which case they will decide who stays and who leaves.

also Tank size..i know one guy who keeps angels in schools in really big tanks(200-300+ gallons) in these tanks there is plenty of space for angels to set up territories (when pairs form)

I find that angels when not spawning will group up. on the down side the spawn about every 2 weeks.

if you want to keep multiple angels, a good minimum to start at is 6 or so.even in "odd" and "even" groups such as 3, 4, and even 5, there not enough members to properly distribute aggression. a bigger group will allow for aggression to be better distributed.

evens or odds is a matter of opinion and how large the tank is as star_rider said.

i don't know that 4 angels in a 46 is a good idea for the long run. i started my 4 in a 55g tank, and when their hormones started they all got beat up. after getting the 150g tank and moving them in there, they still didn't understand the concept of personal space and continued to beat on each other. only in the past couple months gave they stopped their aggression towards each other because there are more fish in the tank to distract them.

When they are small, numbers are not a big issue (as long as its not overstocking). However once a pair forms in your 46, the odds are good they will either kill or drive into hiding all the others. Normally, once you get a pair formed, you remove the others to prevent such problems in your size tank.

It is more of a minimum than odds versus evens. With only three or four if you get a pair the pair will make life not very good for the other one or two. Having more like six or seven spreads out the aggression from the pair much better. Once you get a pair they should be put in their own tank.
