I have 3 juvenile angels in my 55G, I noticed while watching them last night that on the 2 largest ones (probably 4-5" height inc fins) their ventral (I think thats what they are called, the long thin feeler type fins) had a very slight blue tint to them. The 3rd angel does not have this blue tint. Its an even blue all the way along the fins, and is very pale, you have to look closely to see it. The fish are all acting fine, eating anything in sight, very active, etc. Is this something I should be worried about? I can't find anything on Google.

Also, if I were to add a small school of tetras to the tank, would it help any to cut down on the aggression between the angels? I realize they are aggresive, and it does not bother me, I just wonder if having some other fish around will distract them a little (I don't want to put in tetras for the angels to direct their aggresion towards, just put in their as a distraction).

Thanks.

Angesl are not typically aggressive unless you have a mated pair. The blue tinge to the fins i believe is a sign of maturity.

You may indeed have a mated pair of angels, if so you will probably have eggs laid before long if they are getting aggressive. Watch the tank and see if you notice two picking on the third one.. Even if you do have what appears to be a pair, only having viable eggs will assure you that it is a male and female pair. Angels cannot be sexed before there first spawn, and even after then if you do not know exactly what you are looking for, and even if you do, they are very hard to sex.

Thanks for the reply, I have noticed 2 of them being more aggresive to the 3rd. However, its one angel with the blue tint and the smallest angel who are more aggresive to the 3rd (and largest). They have taken over the right half of the tank, the largest has taken over the left half. I do notice some aggresion between the 2 who hang out together, but its usually the zebra angel toward the gold angel, and I believe may be a case of mistaken identity. The zebra will go towards the gold as if it is going to attack, but then stop short, if it is the other gold (and larger) angel he/she will not stop short.

I will keep a close eye on them, it would be cool to get a pair.

you may be seeing signs of a pair forming.. the female will actually stand the male off and lip lock..the aggression is a bit different as she is 'testing' the male..to see if he is worthy.
I am seeing this now as what I had hoped would be a pair of wild angels after 2 years together. the suspected female (much smaller than the suspected male) has been strutting. face to face stand off...if they start lip locking then I may actually have a pair. (crossing fingers)
blue tinting on the fins will vary from color to color..i see it most pronounced on wild angels I keep.

I am glad the blue tinting is normal, it looks really neat and adds to what are already great looking fish. When you say "lip locking" is this when they appear to be aggressive face to face? instead of the usual hitting the side/chasing type of aggression? If so I have seen them doing this, and have also seen them almost dance for the other angel.

If a pair does form I will try to get pictures of any spawning that may take place.

You have a mated Pair. Congratulations!

it will take these 2 at least 3 spawns for to get it right.

You have a mated Pair. Congratulations!

I do hope so, it will be very exciting.

Not sure what, if anything, I will try and do with any eggs/fry as I don't have the space for a breeding operation. The only other tank I have is a 10G, which I guess I could temporarily use to hatch any eggs, but would not be any good longer term.

yes face to face..
from that it sounds like a pair is forming.

the 55 is usually large enough to be safe for other fish..if the pair does not decided to take the entire tank.

at risk could be the other angel.

usually they don't pay too much attention to the other fish but another angel is seen as a threat..keep a watchful eye out.

good luck

I think I thought they were too small/young to be pairing up, I imagine they are probably around 6 months old. Hopefully if a pair does form, they will keep their space to the right of the tank as they do now.

At the moment the only other fish (besides the 3rd angel) are 4 (soon to be 8 cory cats) and also soon to be 8 rummynose tetra (if I can find them).

many of the angels may form pair bonds in 6-10 months from birth.
just keep an eye on them.
