Another genetically altered fish

I seen these fish before, I have to admit they are very noticed by children (and me lol). I don't have a problem with it as long as they don't feel any pain, and are healthy, they are pretty fish though. I don't like to complain about things you can not stop, the fish are going to be bought whether YOU do it or not, so hey, just look and enjoy is what I say.

I personally don't like them, but I find dyeing and tatooing to be much worse practices. Like Rb said, as long as there is a demand, they'll be in the shops.

I believe that Glofish were originally developed for detecting contaminates in water treatment facilities with more research after 9/11.

Did you know they have their own web site? And they come in three colors now?

It's actually interesting reading, IMO.

Here they are --

They were actually developed well prior to 9/11 and patent rights apply to Dr. Gong. So, every glofish out there puts money in this concerned scientist's pocket in some fashion. It sounds like a scientist that came across the gravy train and ran with it. Now if only they could develop fish that automatically color in the presence of Ammonia, Nitrite, and Nitrate so that I wouldn't have to count drops... ;)

I don't completely agree with the genetic altering of fish i think if they are to be used solely as and for scientific research and kept in a controlled environment fine but they should not be sold to the general public as pets. Cross breeding from the same species is completely different from taking genes from jelly fish and adding them to the eggs of zebra fish, combing the DNA of two different species.

read this link for some more info.

i work for petco and one of the few stores that recently was lucky enough to get the yellow/green ones. all three colors in a tank together was cool as hell. we sell out of these in no time flat even with the $5 price tag and after telling people they have a schooling nature

Genetic alterations are a lot better than dying/painting the fish. As long as there's a demand for brightly colored, hardy freshwater fish, they'll keep being produced.

Speaking as someone with a genetic mutation that gives me an 80% chance of getting cancer, I'd welcome some genetic engineering in my own body!

I don't understand whats the problem. Look at guns, I think they are much more dangerous than glofish and they don't band them.

Look these fishes are great, healthy, and are not in pain. Also long as they are not able to have wild populations, then there is no problem. So in places where there is winter, there is no problem. It should be regulated where it is possible for them to establish wild populations because just like guns, people will be stupid.

Genetic modification does not increase the chances in developing cancer unless altering that specific gene. Such as BRA 32 for breast cancer. Its like changing our hair color at a genetic level. We can do that by having a kid with someone with a different hair color and hope the gene passes on. Or it can be done fast by just selecting the gene. There is no monster created.
