Well here i am in my most noob post to date. Below are 2 pics showing 2 female Swordtails, who i think are both pregnant. I bought them about 2 1/2 weeks ago and the guy at the shop said he thought they were pregnant then. What do you guys think ? also would you have any idea on a time frame before birth :S

It maybe a little eary to tell. My females look like that all the time. They tend to have a round belly on them. If they are pregnant you will know soon enough as they tend to get quite large.
 
i don't think they are pregg, bellies look pretty close to normal.

and if they are they aren't anywhere near givin birth.

from what i've seen, their bellies usually get HUGE.
 
You can tell but the colouration of the gravid spot at the back of the fish. It will start out dark get lighter to the point of almost white as she progresses in her pregnancy to the point that you can see the eyes of the babies just a day or two before she will give birth. The gravid spot is the dark colouration near the anal fin of your fish.

My female platy is so darkly colored that I can never see any gravid spot on her. She's had 5 batches of fry though. I can always tell when she's about to give birth. Her belly gets huge and starts to get that squared off look that I've read about. She paces the tank and swims erratically and then starts to pop the little wigglers out. I've been able to watch her give birth to 3 of her 5 batches. It's pretty neat. I don't even freak out when I see the newborns get devoured by their tankmates anymore.
 
what can you do to protect the little fry? just lots of hiding places and that is all?
