Does anyone here successfully used any alternative media NOT manufactured by the original maker of the filter? I'm not looking forward to spend $$ on those Eheim media again... :headshake2:

Ceramic rings from other manufacturers tend to be cheaper than Eheim's (though Fluvals, for example are also larger).

Really, it's tough to beat good old Nylon pot scrubbers for surface area. A coarse/fine pad sandwich w/ some potscrubbers in between isn't a bad way to go.

nylon pot scrubbers and lava rock (for grills) have always worked for me.

I use some 100 micron filter mat, and cut to fit.
A soup bowl from the kitchen is the exact size of the media tray in my FX5
I flip it upside down on the mat, and trace it with a razor knife.

I have used poly fill (for quilts and pillows) as filter floss as well...

Ditto on the polyfill. I scan the supply catalogs and sites for the cheapest material, whether bioballs, sponges, etc, and get that regardless of the brand of filter I have.

What are you planning on replacing?
The sponges last a few years and the bio should last many years. The only thing you should be replacing is the fine pad, which you can use regular filter floss for 2.50 a bag or some folks use pillow batting which I think is the same stuff.

I use pot scrubbers and "snow" I buy it right after Christmas at 75% off. It is the same polyfill that is used for quilts. You just have to make sure it is the kind that doesn't have the glitter on it.
