Does anyone know of any common or not to hard to find cichlids that would do well as a pair and hopefully breed in an establishoed 10 gallon planted tank with 3 dwarf otocinclus? The PH is slightly acidic around 6.5-6.7, I can always adjust the temp for the right cichlid so temp would be no problem. I have an aquaclear 50 and run it at its lowest flow rate, no co2, but looking about putting in a DIY system soon, I have 2 23 watt compact fluorescent in 2 5.5inch dome lamps 6500 K from Lowes 2 for $10 n the plants r thriving, but is that to bright or just too much lighting? Very small gravel for plants its from crib-sea I think its called eco- complete or something like that, some little rock caves n a small piece of mopani driftwood, the tanks been running for over 2 months now n the oto's have been in there for about a month n are doing great, I currently keep it at 78 degrees but as I mentioned I can easily change that for the cichlids. And if there really isn't any that are not to hard to come by except rams, any suggestions, especialy looking to breed them. Any kind of help and ideas would b greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any feedback and help. Dave

Some of the apistos would do fine. There are smaller bodied ones such as the panduro that would do fine in a 10. Some bigger bodied would not do so well.

Still debating

I actually thought about some shell dwellers, the little multies caught my eye but I wanted a planted aquarium so I thought of some kind of dwarf cichlid would b cool. I have been looking at some rams online and ppl say they show some character and have a personality which seems neat to me. I would really like to get and breed a pair of dwarf mouth brooders if there are any and if they would do well in my tank. I also have a 28 bow front that I'm gonna eventually set up for some smaller mbunas, but I'd have to do more research to see if theres any that would fit a tank that size. I would like to set it up as a species tank. But that's my next project, maybe I better just focus on this one for now lol, thanks for your feedback!

There's some of the Lateacara's that stay small, tend to be a personal favorite of the dwarfs. If you found a pair of Curviceps they may work in a 10g planted plus they're a fairly tough lil fish.

Haven't had my Buckelkopf's long enough to give any experience on them but so far they are another Lateacara that is on the small side.

Some of the "Nanochromis" spp. from West Africa. They're not as common in shops as SA dwarfs, but just as attractive. The genus has gone through a revision into several genera the past few years and I'm not sure of where all the species fell out. My personal favorites are Nanochromis transvestitus, Nanochromis parilus and Congochromis dimidiatus.
