Hey All,
I am currently on my third week of cycling my tank with Nitrates coming down. I wanted to start a cichlid tank because of thier color and look so I used crush coral as substrate but now as I am reading different threads I am wondering if I bit off more than I can chew. My tank is a 30gal which may mean it is too small. So now that my cycling may soon come to an end, I may be stuck with just crush coral and limited live stock. If you all think that maybe it would be better if it was a bigger tank then what can I put in the current tank with the crush coral. Angels? Discus? i am a little bummed out because i was hoping I would be able to keep quite a few cichlid fish. Help if you can. Thanks. :(

A 30g is suitable for a few tang species. Check out the shelldwellers (in general), lamprologus, neolamprologus, julidochromis and altolamprologus genuses as well as many others. Theres an article at http://cichlidae.com about dwarf cichlid species from the rift lakes, you may also want to check that out.

What's the pH of the water right now? Are you more interested in African or Central/South American Cichlids? The pH would help determine that. You could remove haf the coral and replace it with half gravel. Use a lighter gravel and it will be barely noticed. Anyway...check the pH.
