My pH is 6.2 right now. What about a scattering of shells at the bottom of the tank to add the Ca++?

Ca++ does not raise nor stabilise pH. It's bicarbonate you need.

I have used dolomite gravel substrate(typically used in SW setups) in my Cichlid tank-it raised the pH from 6.2 to 7.8 no problem-and I haven't had to add anymore-even with adding a large piece of driftwood. The great thing was it didn't take very much(about 1 pound in a 55g)

Why is everyone suggesting crushed coral to increase the pH? Am I misunderstnading something. Is Ca++ just a buffer?

Ca++ doesn't do anything to pH. It will however raise your GH because it is a metal ion. Like KarlTH said, you need the carbonate. That will raise pH and KH.
