I'm going this evening to look at a 2003 Chevy Malibu with 46,802 miles on it for $7,000. However, I have read some horrid reviews on Malibus. Now I don't know whether or not I should even go look at the darn thing. Anyone own one? Used to own one? Know someone that owns one? Any helpful info would be super! Thanks gang!

Never owned one myself, but FWIW I know a guy that got 170,000 miles out of a late 90's Malibu. Beat the hell out of it, and never had any major problems. It was still running OK, but tradded it in recently for a new one. I was shocked when he told me how many miles he put on it.

I'm a Grand Prix nut. You can probably get a comparable (and better) '04GP for a few thousand more. If you can afford it of course. If not, I haven't heard anytihng, but it seems to me that lately (like the past 15 years) a manufacturer has good periods and bad periods quality wise. I think you'll be all right, so long as the car wasnt' abused. On the flip side, if the reviews are credible, give them some weight. Friends are great for input. When professionals review cars though it's not necessary for the same "perspective" as yours and may not apply.

do not. do not do not do not.

i had an 02 malibu for a couple years as a gov't issue vehicle, and drove it since mile 2. that car was a POS, imo. I just had it traded in for an 08 ford focus, and while i am not a ford fan in the least, i'm duly impressed by the new focus.

My co-worker drives a 02 Malibu and it is fine. She puts a few dollars each year in it to keep things going, but nothing major.

Well I went and looked at the car. It's beautiful. Like brand new inside and out. I signed some paperwork on it and have until 8pm to make up my mind or they will put it back on the lot. Thanks for the input! You've all, aside from Jon!, have made me a little more comfortable about it. I'm still torn though as I'd prefer an Impala since this is going to be our sole vehicle for a while (:wall: I was in the process of getting my OWN car until the engine took a poop in our Buick *sigh*). I'm thinking this is probably a deal we shouldn't pass up though. The dealer actually knocked about $2000 of the price and will let me have it for $7,000 out the door (includes tax, title, and registration). Ah! Decisions decisions!! :headshake2: The one thing I don't like about the Malibu is the lack of cruise control! With all the trips back and forth to Michigan cruise control has become a good friend of mine. I do like that it's a V6 though!
I'll keep the AC world posted on whether or not I buy the car and if I do, I'll post some pics. I think we're going to make a lunch time cruise to DC to look at an 03 Impala, 62,432 miles for $6500. More miles, same year, bigger engine, but I can't imagine it being as *perfect* (condition) as the Malibu is.
