Does anyone know of a South/Central American species of shrimp for the FW aquarium and where I might could get a hold of said species?

I like the cherries, but I'm trying for a pseudo S. American biotope tank.

there are both filter feeders and algae eater shrimp native to the south american freshwater environments, but they don't seem to be as popular in the hobby as the asian ones. You might shoot an email to frank at frank's aquarium, he is really in the know. I do not know what the native species are myself... but have seen videos that show shrimp that look similar to ghosts or amanos. I think the vampire filter feeders are south american, or african, but I forget. also, vampire crabs are south american, I believe.

Atya gabonensis occurs in South America as well as Africa. There are some freshwater ghost shrimp native to South America; I think Palaemonetes ivonicus or P. carteri (Amazon ghost shrimp) is imported occasionally. There are also several species of river shrimp (catadromous Macrobrachium species) in South and Central America, but they are mostly big predators, not suited for community tanks.
