Although I'm getting a 10' tank (see this thread) it isn't exactly mine... My grandparents own their own business, and the tank is going in the lobby of their new building. I'm the one who suggested it though, and I get to take care of it, so it's essentially mine.

ANYHOW, my tank is a 10g, and it's not getting any bigger anytime soon, since my parents refuse to let me have anything larger upstairs. I'm also limited to freshwater, as the tank is, as I mentioned, upstairs. Over the years, I've had fish from most of the easily-obtainable families... The only ones of the more common families that I haven't kept are tetras, killifish and rainbows...

I've even had discus and angels in there (baby ones anyhow), but the tank is a mess right now, it needs to be torn down and re-done, and there's nothing in it but a couple of 1" leopard corys. The tank is getting Co2 and an upgraded lighting system, so hopefully the plants will do better than they have been... However, to get to my question, do you have any suggestions for what I could stock it with if I wanted to go with fish that are not terribly common?

You have several options, but it really depends on what you prefer. But, I would have to recommend the Spike-tailed paradise fish (Pseudosphromenus dayi). I have 4 and they are very unique little fish (about the size of a betta) and are not all that common. Also, the males are not as aggressive with each other as many other labyrinth fishes.

Here's a picture of one

How about this, keeping this tank as a planted cory tank. See they can breed in there. I would think that would be a fascinating tank.
gosh and I bet ever one thought I was gonna say Heterandria Formosa (least killiefish) or another type of live bearer. ;)

hmm... that's not a bad idea. I like catfish :D The paradise isn't a bad idea either tho... I've had blue paradise fish, and I liked them...

So many fish, so little space :D

I see 1,000 cardinal tetras...

That would be SO cool. Good luck setting up a 10' tank though... from 10g to 10' is a big step.

I was actually thinking along those lines for the big tank... right now it's between:

Discus/community (Discus, Angels, Tetras, possibly some Gouramis)

Barbs (some large schools of small barbs; checkered, cherry, tiger, and some danios)

Arrowana/Knife fish/community (1 Arrowana or Knife fish, some large fish that can take care of themselves- e.g. Oscars)

Silver Dollars (imagine this for a second: a large tank full of silver dollars with a sign saying "Beware of piranah". Whenever anyone is in the lobby, I walk by, stick my hand in the tank while holding brine shimp, live tubifex, etc. in a fist with some red food coloring. As soon as the fish start to take notice and pick at my hand I scream for help... ;))

but for my tank, I dunno. There's some kind of African Chichlid (big help, huh?) that I was thinking of keeping in there, but it gets to 4" and a single one, plus a baby plec would probably just about fill the tank...

I have a current fascination with blue eyed rainbows. Pseudomugil furcatus or pseudomugil gertrudae or pseudomugil connieae are all beautiful rarely seen species that are small enough for your tank. They like plants, are easy to keep and will lay for you (according to what I have read at http://members.optushome.com.au/chelmon/Pseudomugil.htm ).

Two of the three above are now listed on aquabid. I would if I could...
