Its the only reality show Ive seen that truly cares about people. Amazing stuff.

Ya I love that show, have to say I started watching it because of Ty the carpenter. I've thought he is so entertaining that I watched one just cause he is on it. but you are right that show is awesome.

I've been working my way through those type of shows starting with This Old House, HomeTime, New Yankee WorkShop, Trading Spaces, etc. Then came Robot Wars, Monster Garage, American Chopper, etc. I still like If Walls Could Talk, Restore America and Curb Appeal. Designer Challenge is still a favorite too.

I like it, but also watched an interesting piece on the show from a non-biased standpoint. The show I watched was going behind the scenes of these reality shows. Believe me, these people are getting rich in the process. However, if it helps out deserving families then I am all for it. :)

The last show was in Detroit and so it kind of strikes close to home when they travel around the U.S. My local news station had an interview with Ty Pennington last night...

I cant imagine them making any more money than most of those other shows. Heck trading spaces budget is what 2K? Surely that had nearly the same size audience.

Now this show is putting 500,000K into each home and theyre making out even better? I cant believe that.

Well, obviously they make good money. Disney (abc, espn, etc) is not in the habit of losing money. I agree with you though, Slip, that this is one of the few make over shows that seems to target people who really need the make over.

The Detroit show this past week had me pretty weepy and my wife was a mess over it. Even if they don't truly care about the people they're helping its enough for me that the ones they help are deserving.

The Extreme Makeover where they give away plastic surgery is decent too. I'm not a big fan of plastic surgery and I think shows like The Swan take on s ome people who really need a good therapist more than surgery. EM seems to take on some people who really do need help and are pretty well grounded.

Heck, shouldn't making money while helping people be the goal of every democratic business?!? Certainly better than hurting the masses.

I've watched a few of them, and I think they are great. Much better than the Monster House, where they ended up with freakish things too often. I just hope that the focus on this type of show doesn't end up hurting the lower key, 'normal house' charity organizations like Hands for Homes and Habitat for Humanity.

I agree with Tom about extreme makeover the people version... those shows like the swan are horrible, but e.m. people version really helps people who are very, very sad/depressed about how they look. The first time I saw it there was a lady on there who was always teased becuase she looked like a witch -- and she did! She had a bulgy nose, pointy chin, bad teeth etc etc... and was depressed and hated herself. They totally made her into a normal looking woman, and she was ecstatic.

I want to see some updates on the people from extreme makeover, I think it would be interesting to see how their lives changed (or stayed the same?)...

Original question: Yes, I LOVE extreme makeover home! I missed the last one though. The one that had ME bawling (not that that's a hard thing to do) was the one with the little girl who could never go out in the sun, she had to bundle up and basically only go out freely at night... couldn't even sit in certain parts of her own home at certain times of the day. SO sad. What they did to that house was amazing!

Does abc/disney make a profit, oh yeah, but they help people in the process and that's really the most important thing (imho!).

Im not saying it doesnt pay off for Disney, Im saying I bet the show itself is not making money (or at least any significant amount). Disney/ABC is probably using it as advertising. Heck its not like Disney doesnt run another station with no commericals and making no money...

Heck, Im sure its got some people to watch the other ABC shows.

In any case, what sucks is that the local or state goverments then reasses these peoples homes, then charge them 3x as much. There is already one person who had to sell their home because they couldnt afford the taxes.
