my new sump for my 120 gallon has a king 1000 submersible return pump made by resun.

it has a dial to turn it from 1000gph to 550 gph.

even 550 gph seems high for my tank and it seems noisy.

What is the size of siphon tube from inner to outer overflow box?

Do you have a valve on the pipe from over flow box to sump? If you do (mine have 2), open the valve to the max.

Or you could try a couple of siphons from inner to outter.

actually I have a drilled bottom with a 1 inch bulkhead.

also a durso style one inch standpipe.

If this is the case, then the water flow rate to the sump in constant and cannot be altered. And thus you must match the flow rate of the return pump with the flow rate to the sump.

The way I found to control the flow rate from the sump to the tank is to place valve and use the valve to regulate water flow rather than the pump. I would put the pump at its highest rating and use the valve to match the flow rate with the flow to the pump.
