I just got a Fluval 403 for my 55 gallon, and I assembled it based on the instructions, the second I plug it in I hear all kinds of sounds but the water does not go in nor out, I have filled up the filter with water as well. I know on the new 404s they got that little start thing that you have to pull, how the hell do you start the 403s?

I just tip mine over until it fills with water then slowly turn it upright. ;)

put water through the tube which feeds into the filter with the valve closed , then start it up and open up the valve, you may also want to fill up the filter too

it may be diff because its a fluval but i started my eheim by sucking on the hose that the water comes out of, took about two seconds and really didnt get that much gross water in my mouth

With my FilStar, I close the valves on both the input and the output. Then I fill up the input tube, and connect it to the canister. This is when the filter is primed. I then open the valvs and since there is no air in the input, but theres air in the output, the water rushes down and fills the canister. I then plug it in, and watch the impeller do the rest of the pumping.
