Anyone know how to make a prefilter?

Hey, since I am about to embark on a shrimp tank, I realized that I need a prefilter. Problem is that I don't want to pay much money for it.

Anyone have ideas on how to make one? I have your average HOB.

i just use the ac sponges and cut a hole in it. cheap and easy.

I do that as well and also use media bags (less than a buck for one) and just put them over the intake.

yep..as above...get ac sponges, cut a slit in it not quite all the way through and slide it on the intake. presto! prefilter. They look better. Other cheap options are media bags as jinkzi mentioned, nylon bags and panty hose.

yup.
I even cut the netting from a fish net, and rubber banded it on the intake before.

Just buy a block of foam prefilter..
Cut an X through the center of it (lenghtwise)
Insert the pick up tube (with the screen attached) into the X

Presto!

It took me $5 and 10 minutes of my time to make prefilters for all 3 of the filters in my 30 gallon tank. They keep out strands of java moss that get sucked in and tangle up in the impeller, reducing the flow.
