Couldnt keep discus with a ph of 8 and you coldnt keep malawis with a ph of 4. It does matter. I have had failiure with several soft water teras, but when put in a softwater aquarium they thrived.
actually Discus can be kept in a pH of 8 I know several folks who keep them at that pH. they do seem to have more issues when gh is high tho.

Fish can adjust to pH almost instantly. GH changes (a closer level to TDS) will take longer to adjust fish to but most should be fine outside of their "preferred ranges."

I've kept blue rams in liquid rock. No health problems.

Anyways, test regularly and do a water change whenever the ammonia and nitrite are readable.

Of course they did. But we're talking about pH, not soft and hard water. They're not the same thing. You can keep discus a pH 8, if the water's soft. You can't keep many fish at a pH of 4 because it interferes with sodium uptake, but almost anything is fine above 6, including Malawis. It's just almost impossible to create the hard high TDS water Malawis like without having a high pH.
