My younger apple snail has started showing irregular growth in the area of the mantle edge. It looks similar to the shell in this picture: http://www.applesnail.net/content/photographs/pomacea_brid_shelldamage_light.jpg
His is not as severe as this picture, but if it progressed I'm assuming that's what could happen. Right now the mantle edge is still intact, but shows a visible white line and the bottom edge of the shell curves up on both sides towards the mantle edge. I think it was probably aggravated by my larger snail who was "in the mood" and kept climbing on and riding around on the poor little guy. For right now I have the smaller snail in a breeder's net in the tank.

Is there anything in specific that I should be doing to help his shell? They are fed snail jello, algae wafers, shrimp pellets, or spinach once a day (usually the jello). Tank temp is 78, ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 5, pH 7.6 w/crushed coral & cuttlebone in filter. I know that shell growth irregularities can be caused by change in feeding patterns, but I don't know what I should do now? Any advice? Thanks!

Think the best thing you can do is feed them food with a lot of calcium in it. Keep with the jello just make sure you're adding calcium to it. Mine had a bit like that but I just kept feeding her jello and she's recovered.

Lots of calcium and clean water is the best treatment.
Generally fissures are genetic problems where the mantle doesn't lay down new shell properly. Usually the snail is able to close the fissure on its own and calcify any exposed tissue underneath.
Good idea to keep the other snails from mounting the little one, as that could open the fissure more and damage the tissue underneath. You're doing everything right. :)

Alright sounds good, I put a double dose of calcium powder in the last jello batch so I'll just keep feeding that. How long should I keep him separated? Until the growth is corrected? How long does this type of thing take to correct itself? Questions questions questions! thanks!

The only other thing I saw that could help is to lower the tank temp to slow their growth as they heal the fissure.
