Wondering if an AC hob loses its siphon in a power outage?
So then the power comes on, the filter starts running, but with no water so it burns the motor out. Has anyone had this happen with an ac?
I used to have one that kept its siphon, but I dont remember the brand!

All of my AC filters restart on their own after a power failure. I unplug them during water changes and just plug them back in. They restart every time for me:)

I would disargee mine only restarts on it's own 1 out of 3 tries. Not even 50/50...I have the AC 50, on my 10 gallon tank and I would not even considering only running this one filter thing on a tank larger than 15 gallons.

on a side note the impeller has stopped on me a few times on it's own when the filter is dirty (if I don't clean it every week) I came home one weekend and it looked like it was stopped for quite some time....But after nudging the impeller it started right back up again, amazing that the motor did not burn up while I was away. Actualy this has happened a few times now. I can't wait to find a deal on a small canister.

I have 5 AC filters at the moment, and they all start up just fine. I've never had an impeller stick, and I rarely clean the motor housing

okay, as a side note, aqua tech and aqua clear are not the same brand.
Could some of you be confusing the two?

My aqua clear 110 has survived around a dozen power outages without a single problem. As long as the water level is high the water will remain nearly through the entire system and it will start up fine. If the water level is low however expect big problems (if your no at home). Aqua Clears aren't self priming so they need a high water level to start up.

The only way it could happen is if your tank water was two low and then it could happen with any filter. When I do a water change I always have to refill my AC's with water because once the end of the intake tube is exposed it creates a reverse syphon and emties out the filter. I have never once had a problem with them not restarting after a power outage and unfortuneatly I have lots of experience with this problem lately. As long as the filter box stays full of water they should prime no problem. All filters will have this same problem. You cant create section unless the end of the intake tube in the filter is covered with water.

That has been my experience as well...keep the water level up, and it works hunky dory. My AC 110 was an awesome filter...I just don't have the room for it right now (inches count where my big tank is located).

My AC500/110 survives anything. However my AC20/Mini always burns out whenever there's a power outage. Luckily, I work at an LFS that carries Hagen products, so I'm always able to find an old motor lying around somewhere.
