Aqua Clear Sponge Filter Turns Red

I have a 55 gallon with an aqua clear filter. Lately when I've been doing my water changes and filter media rinses, I've noticed that the sponge filter is red. Out of fear of it being a bad thing, I've been replacing it because I think it's red algae. Any ideas?

Nothing unusual. I've had the tank running for over two years doing regular water changes, I'm not losing any fish yet. I just don't want to end up losing any.

How is it normal? I never had it before. Maybe it would help if I knew what it was.

Over time the sponges discolor from the pristine white to a dull orange/red. It is natural and nothing to get you worried. You risk doing more harm to your bio bed from constantly changing sponges than from the color change.

None of my sponges have ever turned red. Brown/green yes.

Just a thought what color is the substrate?

Yeah mine usually turned brown. That's why I was concerned about it. Thanks for all the input.
