Hello everyone,

I have lost a few of my platy fry because of my aquarium filter intake sucking them up, I managed to save them and get them into a breeder net. I was wondering if there is a type of cover available on the market for the intake of the filter or any way to rig it to prevent this from happening in the future. I have an Aquaclear 50 Hang on type filter. Thanks!

Jim

Buy another sponge for an aquaclear, cut an "X" in the center of the top and slide it over the intake tube. I've done this several times with my AC filters.

It adds more filtration too:)

Big Al's has some generic aquarium sponges in a variety of sizes. I once bought a 9 x 12 x 2 block of it and I really did get a lot of milage from it.

Just make sure to rinse the sponge off when doing water changes or it will eventually clog and slow the filtration down.

I use the same method for my Penguin HOBs.

Pantyhose?

I know, I use pantyhose, too :) I kinda like the sponge idea, though, because it would help pad anybody who got stuck.

Rallysman, how do you slip it over the intake? Is the hole lengthwise in the sponge, so that the entire intake gets covered? Otherwise, I'm picturing a big sponge laying sideways with a hole in the very middle
