hey now all,

minutes ago we had a bad thunderstorm and for a split second we lost electricity. My aquaclaer wont start up again...and its plugged in. the light is plugged in the same power strip and its working but my filter isnt. Any tips on what I can do to get it started again? I tried unplugging it then plugging it in again...and nothing. I tried pouring some water over the filter but nothing.

any tips?

thanks

Jared

Mine did the same thing last week. I took the motor off, cleaned the impeller and then put it back together again and it worked. Don't ask me why but it did. The motor was a bit hot ( I had unplugged it so that I could install some netting and when I turned it back on it was not priming - I think it got overheated).

Can't say why it worked but I am glad that it did.

If the impeller isn't spinning like it should, do not leave it plugged in as this isn't good for the filter. Take the impeller piece off, and like someone else mentioned, clean it well. Add some more water into all chambers and it should work.

AquaClear's are known for doing this after a blackout or power-outage. They are great filters, but you have to know how to fix them as this can happen often. Just be patient with it and report back to us as I'd be interested in knowing if it gets working again. ;)

All HOB filters need periodic cleaning of the impeller to assure that it will automatically restart after power outage. This is critical when you plan to be away for vacation. Among the big three HOBs manufacturers, I found that Marinland Penquin is most reliable and Whisper least in restarting. I only needs to clean my Penquen once every 3 to 5 months to ensure restarting, but Whisper needs to be cleaned every 2 to 3 weeks.

when ever this happened to me i just tapped the impeller with a toothpick and it took off. HTH

I second that. On top of keeping the impeller clean (about once a month) sometimes it needs a little tap to get going. Kinda like those old timy airplanes that needed someone to spin the prop. to get it going.:D

I am using 2 ten year old whispers always restart clean impellers about once or every other month when the rest of the filter is getting cleaned only one I had a problem with is one that got dropped and the little spacer tab broke and put a hole in the tank, I was thinking of getting a marineland biowheel only for the biowheel aspect of the penguin so that I don't need to worry about the dips in biological.
