I just found out that there is a surface skimmer attachment for the AquaClear filters. Although I don't have a serious problem with visible surface film, I was still thinking this might be a good addition to my Aquaclear.

Are people using these? Do they work well or are there problems associated with them?

I’ve used one in the past. It’s sitting in a drawer right now. In a larger tank, I think it could be useful (maybe attached to a mini) as a supplemental filter but not attached to the main one because the filter is dividing its ‘attention’ between the surface and the bottom grate - depending on how much you adjust the flow into the top basket. It’s not picking up as much mid- and bottom- water dirt. In a small tank, a 5 gallon with a betta for example, it would be fine on its own. That’s what I used it for. The betta tank seemed to have more oily surface scum, maybe because of his food.
