Hi. Im new here. This is my first thread. I got a new tank today and this new filter came with it. It seems to be working, but there is no bubbles appearing from it.
Its totally submerged underwater and when i put my hand beside it, i can feel the water jetting out of the nozzle but no air.

In the instructions, it says the pump cleans and aerates the water?? Surely it should be bubbling then?? Its got a 3yr guarantee, but i dont want to return it to the pet shop if i might get a suggestion of what to do here to tweak it in some way

Im sure its put together correctly etc.

Anybody out there got one or had one know whats going on. Ive checked the tube isnt blocked or kinked etc

Thanks

Gotta be this one > http://www.aquaessentials.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=2415

This is the first I've heard of it.

I see what looks like a hole at the top left, in that pic. If it is, maybe you need to put an airline in it. That would reach above the water surface to allow it to suck air in, then blow out bubbles.

Just plain surface agitation will oxygenate the water. But by the way they talk about it. I'd suspect its supposed to be blowing bubbles too.

Yea, it has an airtube and i have it fitted correctly. It bubbled for around 30 seconds when i first put it in the water. its supposed to be fully immersed at least 3cm below the surface.

Iv taken it out a few times and tried again to put it in. Same thing. Stops bubbling after 30secs or so. Adjusted the power settings too. Its up full blast and still same

I think I'll just phone the pet shop tomorrow and speak to them.

Cheers

If you are talking the basic principal of a power-head's ability to draw off air from the pickup air tube you insert into the small intersecting port on the side of the main out-flow port, there is a DIY fix that has worked wonders for me on all size power-heads big and small.

(1) Take the end of the flexible air line you normally stick in to the out-flow port and with a pair of scissors cut the very tip off at a 45 degree angle so that the end is now sort of pointed.

(2) Now take the end of the cut airline and insert it with the cut-off end facing the direction of out-flow or down stream and thread the end of the airline deep this time, so deep that the end actually intersects half way into the main out-flow port as if to block it. You should be able to see down the main outflow port and see the airline stabbing deep 1/2 way down with the cut end facing as you peep down the main out-flow opening. It should be lodged in so well this time that you almost have to yank to get it out.

(3) Now turn on the power-head and you should notice this time a strong outflow of bubble wash that you can adjust by stabbing the airline deeper or shallower into the air line intersect fitting.

This DIY has worked wonders when a power-head no matter how strong or how weak would seem to not want to suck up air but for a few seconds then quit. This DIY has eliminated this problem on all my power-heads.

i just connect a very small air pump to the tube and you get all the bubble you want

I called the pet shop where i bought it, and she assured me that this pump doesnt produce bubbles. She said as long as you can feel flow coming out it, its working fine.

I still dont think i believe her though. I cant see how aeration happens without bubbles being produced.

I have set it up properly. The end of the air tube is out of the water ok, and theres no blockages. Im happy enough though as I only have goldfish.

My new tank has a heater with it also and Ive heard other aquarium owners tell me that goldfish can flourish with a heater in the water as long as its turned down low. Im not using the heater at the moment but would like to hear the thoughts of others on this forum.(sorry about going off topic!)

Any views on this. All my fish are very small and seem to be taking ages to grow. Ive even heard goldfish grow much bigger with the heater???

I know a guy who has a big aquarium with goldfish and tropical fish flourishing together with the heater on a lower setting. I just love my new tank. Its so cool at night with the lamp on!

i have never heated my aquariums i keep goldfish in and they grow and do great. goldfish are NOT tropical fish and should NOT be kept in tanks with tropical fish. i would say no dont use a heater its not needed.

FYI you don't need bubbles to aerate water.
the air exchange happens at the surface.. moving water exposed at the surface will exchange gasses.

Ive finally got bubbles!! Hurrah. At the external end of the airtube, which hooks over the back of the tank . I realised there was an adjustable cap on the end of the tube. Its supposed to control aeration level.
It was screwed on too tight and unable to draw air thru the pump. I knew the pet shop owner was talking bull as she forgot she told me before i bought it, that it was new instore and she was about to set up a display the same as i bought.(tank, pump/filter, light and heater)
I didnt even get a receipt so i anticipated problems if anything were to go wrong

Im sure aeration was probably happening anyway to a lesser extent without the bubbles, but my girlfriend is now happier as she was nagging me about it

Thanks for all your help. The instructions concerning the adjustable cap were practically non existant
