Is it better to buy a kit with everything you need or to buy it all separetly?

depends on what you want and what you want to pay for it. Starter sets are good to begin with if you are looking for a quick and easy start.

Personaly I got my 55 gallon with everything included on e bay for an EXCELLENT price.

Kits usually give you everything you need. But just check to make sure that your not getting one with an incadesent hood. They are just crappy

It's good to buy the kits if you're just starting out and have no idea what you need....but if you already know what filters/heaters..and accesories you need...you're probably better off getting it all seperate. The equiptment that comes in those kits usually isnt' the best.

I asked about kits at the LFS near my home,PetSmart.

I wasn't impressed with the "gadgets" and asked if I could leave some out and trade up on other stuff. They said they'd do it.I don't need all those chems and the heater. If I did get a heater I'd get 2 smaller than the 1 big.Now I'll be able to upgrade the filter and hood.

The LFS i use will let you put together your own kit and give you like 30% off of what the stuff would cost.

I got my first aquarium (20 high) as a kit for Christmas.

The Penn Plax heater was junk but the rest of the kit is still working fine

One thing I hate about kits is that they almost always have undergravel filters with them. Those have to be the worst filters ever invented.

Keep an eye on ebay or the classified ads in your local paper. You can get good deals there.

I personally put it together from scratch. Did alot of research and oh wait... spent alot of money too.

Should've got a Kit.
