I'm just wondering, those who aquascape with large, heavy rocks and use eggcrate to support the bottom...is there an alternative method for support?

Thanks,
Romeo.

I don't use eggcrate at all. On medium sized tanks (e.g., 75 gallon and smaller) I usually use plexiglass placed right on the tank bottom before adding rocks or substrate. On my 180 (and several 75s) I use thin sheets of slate that sit right on top of the glass. The 180 got slate stepping stones from a garden center - just the right size, good protection for the glass bottom, and if the digging cichlids expose it, it looks very natural.

I too use the slate method...well actually its black, flat flagstone but it looks and feels exactly like slate...anyways, some of the rocks in my tank weigh upwards of 25-30 pounds each so i put the flat peices in, placed the big rocks in, then covered the flagstone with sand and you cant even tell its there. Works great if you have fish that like to dig!!

Using a flat rock bottom sounds like a great idea, thanks.

Wow 60 to 70 lbs! Do you ever move them to clean?

As infrequently as possible. I am now facing the prospect of having to break down the tank to remove a large number of Ps. lombardoi that have gone overboard with the breeding thing. I expect it to take the better part of a half-day, maybe more.

Makes for a nice-looking Malawi tank, though...

Good luck and hopefully everything goes well.
