aquatic plants and oxygen

im not sure what kind of filter i have it came with the tank. its was one of the colored 5 gallon tanks that they sell at petsmart there usually purple, red, green, or orange collored on the base and top. im afriad of turning off the bubblers and my fish might die.

No, don't use bubbles in a planted tank. They reduce the CO2 in your water (which plants need). Big filters can do this too if they cause a lot of surface agitation. You need some water circulation (filters will do this and will usually maintain enough oxygen), but not bubbles.

Unless you're injecting CO2, the bubbler won't drive out any. The tank will remain at equilibrium with the air. If you like the bubbles, keep it on. Turning it off won't do any harm unless you are seriously overstocked and there is competition for O2.

my filter does hang over the back of the tank. and i dont like the bubblers and im not injecting co2 so ill give it a try and turn off the bubblers

thanks guys

Just make sure you have some surface agitation. Plants won't produce O2 at nighttime or in the absence of light. Instead they will compete with your fish in breathing O2 and will emit CO2. But if you have enough surface agitation O2 levels won't be a problem. :dive:
