I've got a 20 gallon tank with 5 Silver Dollars, 2 dwarf Gourami, and 1 Black Skirt Tetra. The tank cycled a few weeks ago. I'm new at this as well. I've noticed some strange markings on 2 of the 5 Silver Dollars that weren't there when I got them. Here's what I'm talking about...

There is a red spot that is on both sides of this one... right behind the eye

This one has it on the front of the belly as well as the sides too.

Is this normal? None of the other fish have the same problem. Is this a sign of maturing or could it be a parasite? One of the guys here at work said it might be an ammonia burn, but the ammonia level is right where it's supposed to be. It doesn't seem to bother them, but I'm curious if this is an issue. Thanks.

BTW... what happened a few weeks ago. It's like the sight went offline. I had just joined and them boom! Oh well... looking forward to these forums.

I'm not sure about the underside colorings but the red spot behind the gill/fin looks like normal to me. My dad has one of those dollars that has big red spots on both sides. Looked like as if it was a sore when I first saw it but its the way the fish is.
BTW I think those dollars might need a bigger tank when they mature. 5 in 20 gal sounds crowded to me.

Wow, those two don't look like any silver dollars I've ever seen! My silver dollars look like the ones you can see in your background, with the red anal fin, no spots and more rounded body shape. These guys seem to have a totally different body shape even! Are you sure they're not, dare I say it, Piranha??

.... my bet is..... nah! I've seen some of those fish before. Not the ones I want to have in future in big tank! *dream*

My silver dollars don't look like those either. One of mine sometimes has a black spot where the red one is on yours. It is usually in the mornings and goes away. I was going to make a post and ask.

Could the one with the red on the belly be...a red bellied pacu? It looks kinda like the ones Wal-Mart sells here. They are mixed in with the silver dollars in my Wal-Mart. Just a thought.

Gretchen, my SD's do that too... with the black dot. If I leave the tank lights off and wait until after dark and then sneak in there and turn them on, they all have dark black dots there, but it fades real fast once the lights are on.

I don't know what Archosman's fish are for sure, my first thought when I saw them was a pirahna, but I don't have much experience with pirahna, my uncle had one years ago and he was spotty like that with a red belly... so thats why I thought that's what he was.

Sublime1184 needs to get here, he has Pirahna, he'll know....

I need to get me some of those then! They're COOL!

:D
