Are Pacu's able to defend themselves against agressive cichlids and sharks?

I was just wondering in case I ever decided to get one. It would definantly sway my decision.

I'm gonna skip the size requirements on this question, becuase their are more than enough overstocking police on this site to cover it, and just answer the question before the thread gets sidetracked into a thread about why pacu shouldn't be sold...

So..

That really depends on the situation,

Yes, if given an incredibly large tank, and no spawning "aggresive cichlids"

No if your talking really nasty fish, Buttikoferi, Dovii.. these types, fish with a nasty disposition, who will mark out a territory larger than most public aquaria can provide..

Most large cichlids.. including the "evil and aggresive" jag, can be quite tame if given enough room, some fish, really are just plain evil though.

No, if the tank is smaller than a few thousand gallons, and you have a pair of spawning cichlids on your hands.. then your gonna be in trouble, if they don't kill it outright, they will certainly stress it to the point of infection, disease and eventual death.

Make sure all the cichlids are the same sex, which is pretty tough, if you wanna add a monster like a pacu, because any pacu large enough to not be lunch, is not gonna have anywhere to hide from a large angry bruiser.

I wouldn't chance it.

I could just see a jaguar or something chasing a pacu and the pacu runs into the aquarium glass........

I have seen them with oscars a lot though....

keep in mind that they are schooling fish and need a massive tank. 1000 gallons is a minimum for a school because they just get so huge and heavy. 300 gallons is ok for 1, but even then thats not enough space because of the ammount of water that they displace when they swim.

Thanx for the info, I knew pacu's got big but I guess I was not aware that they got that big. Ive got a 125G tank, so unless someone dies and leaves me 5 grand to go buy a 300g setup I guess Ill pass on that pacu lol Thanx!

Good choice on passing them up!

i'll have to disagree there.. 300 still wouldnt be enough. i think that 1000 would be minimum for ONE, and 10k minimum for a school.

either way, not generally feasible.
