Are sea fans safe for Freshwater???

Most coral skeletons will alter the water chemistry in freshwater--hardness and pH will probably increase. I wouldn't use them in a FW tank unless your keeping mollies or african cichlids (hard water fish).
 
are they even real skeletons?
Isn't it possible to coat the skeletons with a sealer like they do with the gravel? Some sort of an epoxy coating...
 
Sea fans tend to be fragile--I am not sure how you would apply the sealant without breaking them. I have seen some one who used them as background--placed them right behind the tank, then put a background behind the corals. From the front, it looked like the fans were in the tank, without the problems. I am just not a big fan of SW things in a FW tank and vice-versa.

probably spray-on.

But, being fragile lends itself to another problem - shipping. Both from the source to the warehouse, then to the retailer, etc...
I can see the entire thing likely being an epoxy mold - easier to mass produce and sturdier that way. also wouldn't affect chemistry
