Are there any snails that aren't poop machines?!

I went to the lfs to buy some zebra danios a weeks ago and saw some mystery snails in the same tank. I asked for two, but the guy pointed out that I could get 3 for $2.77, instead of $1 each for two, so I got three.

Big mistake. These guys do nothing but poop. I'm not even sure how much of a clean up crew they are. They probably eat at night, cause they are rarely out during the day.

So are there any snails that won't poop so much? Or at least not poop out the white floating cotton looking poop that floats around with the current and gets stuck on the outside of the filter intake? It looks so dirty because of it.

all animals that eat will poop. in short there arnt any snails that i know of that dont poop all that much.

Do any have a different kind of poop? "Regular" poop like fish that settles at the bottom and doesn't float around all the time?

:( I'm going to split the three snails into three different tanks. They better not have babies!

the white floaty cotton stuff is not poop, it is goop the snail is creating because it is stressed. normal snail poop is brown and looks a lot like pleco poop, long and stuck to stuff, lol.

what are you feeding your snails?

I haven't fed them anything specifically, but I poked some flakes to the bottom and I saw one eating some algae wafer leftovers.

It's been pretty hot these days and I try to keep the temp down with frozen bottles. My guppy tank is another cold room with no hood lights. It gets about 76^ theres versus 80^ in the main tank in the living room. Should I move them over?

On a related note, what are the acclimation requirements for snails? Same as regular fish?

i have pond snails, MTS, and ramshorns in addition to fish/the turtle, and i am on the verge of giving up on trying to keep the poop under control lol

gravel vacs are your friend. :thm:

they will have a longer lifespan if in the cooler tank. as long as there's no fish in there that would nip at the soft parts then i'd drip acclimate them over.

most importantly, you have to be sure the tank they will live in is completely salt free.

i suggest reading the sticky on how to make snail jello, it is a wonderful food for our shellkids.

lol, I have a tank full of mts and they add a wonderful layer of poop to my substrate. Personally I think the amount of cleaning they do and activity (of what they can provide) they add is worth whipping out the gravel vacuum twice a month.
