how bout this line up for a 29 gal?

5 lemon tetra
5 black neon tetra
5 albino or panda cories
1 banjo cat
1 kuhli loach
1 rainbow shark (i know this guy can get a bit aggresive but i thought hed be agood center piece. if anyone knows of another flashy solo type fish that would work well with the others please give me an option!)
i was thinkin 5 barbs instead of one of the little schools of tetra but i read that the tigers i was lookin at were little bullies so i dont think ill get those. mabye theres another nicely vibrant peacefull barb i could use in place of some of the tetra.

also will 2 differant types of tetra school together?

Cherry barbs or Harlequin Rasboras would be better than Tiger barbs IMO, though lots of folks have Tigers in a community tank as long as there are enough of 'em to spread the horseplay around.

Kuhli loaches need other kuhli loaches to feel comfortable- one alone would be too sad.

I agree more khulies are better. If you look in the petstore they are practically laying on each other and huddled together. Barbs instead of tetras would be nice. Rosey barbs are kind of a nice fish.
 
I have a rainbow shark in my planted 40. The other fish used to be a bunch of tetras, and he ignored them. The tetras were removed because my dwarf puffers are nasty little buggers. The only problem with the rainbow will be conspecifics--other, medium fish that are similarly shaped. SAE or CAE, flying foxes, other shark minnows are out--a rainbow will bully them incessantly or be bullied. Make sure you have a nice, large cave for the rainbow to claim, and add him last, after the tetras have settled in. Rainbows are not the terrors that their red shark cousins get to be as adults.

I would definitely get more than one kuhli--you will never see a solo kuhli, but a group will be very visible and social.

Tetras of a similar size will school together, which is why I would pick just one species to have. The bigger school of one species will look much nicer than the same sized mixed school, IMO.
 
ok so ill rework my fish plan a bit. i still like the rainbow shark and it seems advice on that guy is 2 sided. some have had prblems and some havnt. i do like the look of the rams alot and if my LFS has those i may just opt for a pair of them. ill also plan on getting a few kuhlis. but now with adding these fish im starting to worry about my bio load. would this line up b 2 many?

also it seems ive got a fair amount of bottom fish in that list with the cories, loaches and cat. ive been building a fair amount of rock, terracotta pot caves in hopes they will all have a place to hide out.
