Are these pond snails?

Okay, I'm pretty cluesless as to snails. Besides my lone big mystery snail, I haven't had any snails until recently! Since setting up my cherry shrimp tank, I've got a gazillion of them! The ramshorn snails I've been able to identify, but what about these? I hear everyone discuss common old pond snails, is that what these are? Lord let me tell you, snails are worse than rabbits aren't they?

that is your common pond snail. do not despair, for the number of snails in your tank reflects directly upon your ability to not overfeed and keep your tank clean.. ;) i personally love snails and have thousands, for those who dont like them, try not to overfeed, and keep up with the gravel vacs. :)
 
I'll be honest, I don't gravel vac that tank like I should. I'm sorry, I'm intimidated by my cherry shrimp! LOL! There are soooooo many miniscule baby shrimp all over my gravel, I know I'll commit some big slaughter if I do! Whatever I do(or don't do!)seems to kinda be working though! I started out with 50 cherry shrimp, and now have to have in excess of 200. I've only found three dead shrimp, all being older, bigger shrimp, so maybe it was just their time. But I'm really afraid of doing much with the tank, I don't want to kill alot of babies, and there's always babies! So for now, my snail population is rapidly expanding also! LOL!
 
I'm always in the same predicament here. I have tons of snails in my Cherry tank (mostly ramshorns) and I'd love to get rid of them entirely. There is no method of ridding yourself of them all without killing your shrimp as well, short of breaking your tank down and saving some Cherry's in another tank, then setting it back up. No way am I doing that.
 
YES ;those are pond snails. I had a couple of them in my tank, then I got rid of them. At first I thought my mystery snails had finally had babies, but guess again.
 
I put a media bag (small mesh) over my siphon intake and slowly move it around the gravel and into the gravel. The shrimp scurry away. So far I haven't noticed any dead shrimp stuck to my media bag where the siphon opening is at. I did have a recent incident where a full grown shrimp was in my HOB filter reservoir. I do filter maintenance every couple of weeks on the cherry shrimp tank, mainly to change out the carbon so I'm not sure how it got in there. I also have a mesh media bag over the intake of my filter tube but I guess a baby zoe could have made it through the screen and would have a feast on the detritus in the filter. I'm surprised the impeller didn't kill it in the suction process though.

I'm getting ready to sell some of my 100 baby cherry shrimp to my LFS and I plan on siphoning them into a white bucket of tank water and then net out any adult females... especially any egg bearing ones that get siphoned into the bucket. I guess that ride through the siphon hose would be similar to us riding a water slide tube. Wheeeeeeeeeee!!! LOL

As far as my nuisance snails, I just pick them out using my little claw tool. Of course, you can only do this when the get big enough to grab with the tool. The claw tool is a el cheapo plastic tool that I bought online from BigAlsOnline or MarineDepot for around $5.00 and I use it all the time instead of sticking my hands in my tanks. I still have to stick my hands in sometimes but only for major remodeling. I've seen an expensive version of this tool used in planted tanks that even comes with attachments like scissors, etc.

Yeah. I've been making my rounds at several different forums. I'm not sure I'll ever call just one home again after my three years wasted at "that other place". LOL I have been building my blog of all of my "articles" from over there and adding a few more. I just hang out in the coldwater (goldfish) and invert forums here as I do on most of the other forums I visit. I do occasionally visit the newbie and disease forums too but they seem well tended so I only occasionally post outside of the coldwater and invert. I actually happened upon this forum by accident when I was googling info for my blog and saw one of my original articles published here but not under my name. It has been straightened out now but at least the "incident" found me another new home.;)
