I have 2 main questions about keeping an arowana..

1) My first question is whether it is a good or bad idea to keep tinfoil barbs with the arowana at the top of the tank?
Will the barbs rapid pace stress the arowana or is it ok?

2) Finally, is it appropriate to have an arowana in a large fish tank (180) with some regular South American cichlids (parrot fish, jack dempseys, flowerhorns, red devil, etc.)? All the fish are big.. a good 4-5 inches at least.

Thanks for your expertise

i have 2 16" silver arowanas that i keep with 5 6" tinfoil and they get along great
i also have 2 8" bala sharks, 8 clown loaches, one blue gourami, a silver dollar, a few blue crayfish and one blue "yobi" lobster, an 8" fancy gold fish and they all get alone fine
in a 220 gallon fish tank
the only thing is during feeding time the tinfoil and the clown loaches go mental so i try feeding them first.
i feed my fish stake and cooked shrimps and pellets

wow thanks for the info. Very impressive looking tank.

Quick question, the arowanas are never a threat to the clown loaches?

not really
during feeding time if i skip a day they get really aggressive and scince the clown loaches fit in there mouth when i feed them some times the arowanas swallows a clown loach but spits it back out, i think is because of the clown loaches spikes that they have under their eyes it pokes them in the mouth, so the arowanas are very carefull around the loaches

Honestly, most arowanas I've met have a personality of their own. My 20" one is super mellow and is in a tank with 2 severums, a Jack Dempsey, and a syno cat. He doesn't bother any of the fish anymore (he used to a bit, haha), but we keep bigger fish mainly because of the JD. If anything, the JD picks on the arowana! Haha.

Tin Foil barbs should be fine too.

It depends on the arowana.

Mine wouldn't tolerate cichlids or fish that looked like them. He'd actually wiggle and posture at them and get them to lip lock with him.....NOT normal silver arowana behavior. So I had to remove all cichlids before he messed up his mouth bad.

He would tolerate catfish.

Tinfoils might stress a jumpy arow, but a lot of arows would be just fine with them.
