Hi, I am wondering if anyone here has kept smaller cichlids with Asian arowanas and if so which species. I have kept many larger types with them in the past but I am thinking about setting up a new tank with some smaller ones. I am not very experienced with small to medium sized cichlids, so if anyone could give me some suggestions I would really appreciate it. Also, which cichlids are the most agressive in the size range of about 2 to 6 inches. Oh yes, and by "small" I mean about up to 8 or 9 in. Thanks.

Convict is small and can hold their own. And of course, there is always a chance that your aro will eat the con when it gets big.
Or you can try Copora nicaraguense, Heros severus, H. Carpinte, N. Salvini, Green Terror, Geophagus sp., Gymnogeophagus sp.....

About how big do the convicts get? Are they solitary or could I keep a few of them? Thanks for reminding me, I meant to also mention that they will be entering a tank with several adult arowana, which could be a problem if I go too small. FYI, the fish I have kept with them sucessfully have all been larger than 7", so this might need to be the minimum. thanks for your help
It is hard to say. Some people have convict as small as 3-4". I know a few who have 5".
Yes, you can keep a few convicts in that tank. Also, Convicts have been used by many as Target Fish. Convict is hardy fish. Very easy to care for. Beside, they are very cheap
No great loss if they do die.If I still have my aros, I would keep copora nicaraguense. Even though they are bigger than convict, they are beautiful. When push they shove back.
