Ok I have a 30 gallon tank that I want to put an arrowhead puffer in. I just bought the set up and it is goes like this

-30 U.S. Gallon tank
-Whisper 30
-Powerhead
-Heater
-Solid cherry Stand
-Hood
-Undergravel Filter
all for $80. Found it in the paper, and thought it was a good deal.

But anyway. Is this going to be a good set up. I am not going to put in the undergravel filter as I will be putting about 4" of sand in this tank, so the puffer can burrow. This is what I have read to do for this fish.
I was just wondering if anyone on here has ever had a arrowhead puffer. I think it is a real ugly fish(which I love) and I have always wanted an aggresive fish, and this one sounds to be pretty aggressive.
Any other info on this fish will help
Here is a picture of what one looks like, they say the get to about 6.6-8"

All puffer discussions go in Brackish forums, even for the FW species. Moving the thread accordingly. OG

sounds good--I'd double check the size, as I think arrowheads can get quite large, and puffers tend to be messy animals. You'll also want to fully cycle the tank before adding the puffer, since that are very sensitive to nitrogen compounds, and establish a good source of crunchy foods NOW--they require lots of crunchy foods to wear their teeth down and keep them in good shape.

I'm not sure if this applies to arrowhead puffers. From what i've read, they are a predator fish that doesn't have the fast growing teeth as many other puffer do. In the wild they eat fish, not snails and crustaceons, like GSP's and other puffers. There is a great article in the freshwater forums at thepufferforum that might help you out.

I have done a ton of reading on these, and yes they do need to eat snails or whatever has hard shell to keep there teeth down. They don't grow that fast, but everything I have read says they need them about 1 or 2 a month

One or two snails a month for a T. suvattii would be whistling in the wind IMHO.

The lurker predators are not very active fish and do not have the bioload or the appetite of the hunters. Nor are most of them snail eaters, nor do they need a diet as high in crunch factor as the hunters do. They do in the wild eat smallish fish, crustaceans, and mollusks. In captivity the diet should be largely crustacean or open-shell bivalve mollusks. If feeders are used at all they should somthing like frozen/thawed silversides (SW fish, not FW, to avoid parasite transmission).

A 30 (especially the long style) is suitable for a 6" lurker. For an 8" lurker I would want (and use for my Palembang's puffer) a 40-long.

BTW, my Palembang's has snails on his tank. They seem to be permanent residents.
