Arrrggghhhhh!!! Fin Rot Returned!!! Please Help!

I dont know much about your tank but have you tried tackling the problem at the source. There is something that is causing this fin rot and 9 times out of 10 it is water quality. What size is your tank? how much filtration do you have? I know it is difficult but have you tried 30-40% water changes every day? If I had your problem first I would try and find the source of the problem, then I would use salt and do water changes everday adding the calculated dose of salt that you have just taken out with your water change. You don't want to be adding salt on top of salt.

What should I test for in the tap water??
I was doing water changes everyday while the tanks were cycling.
I have a 10g and a 6g.
I've been treating my bettas in isolated bowls floating in the 10g to keep the temp consistant.
I've been treating them as described earlier in this post.
A guy at the LFS said to use bottled water but that just doesn't seem right to me.
I'm thinking their fins probably tore in the first place because they were present in a fishy cycle (I didn't know any better). And now this is what I have to deal with as a result. :(
I feel horrible. I just want them to be better...

This post describes my situation in more detail.

Ok so there is another thread , I have read it now. By the sound of things your water is not 100% and that is more than likely your problem. Dont do 100% water changes it just stresses your fish more. Try treating with salt after you have completely taken the meds out. I would treat finrot the same as I treat would treat ich with the salt input, but don't raise the temperature it is not needed ,there is a good sticky on ich and salt . Definatley do 30-40% water changes and keep feeding to a minimum, if there is any left over food take it out after your fish have stoped eating. Like I said before when you do water changes and you are treating with salt ,you will only want to put enough salt in as you have just taken out.

Even in those tiny betta bowls, don't do 100% changes?
I would think the salt WOULD be less stressful on them and that's what I want...
What else could I test the water for that could be causing this besides Ammonia, Nitrtite, Nitrate, and ph??

I'm am using Amquel Plus and NovAquel to treat the tap water...

If my water is that bad, should I just give up?? I REALLY DON'T WANT TO!!!

My ammonia is 0
Nitrite is 0
Nitrate is 0
ph 7

Any other nasty water suspects??
For the time being these tests should be fine. But, nitrate 0? What is your tap water's nitrate? Also how many ppm will your test kits go down to? Unfortunately most tests kits that are sold in the aquarium trade dont give accurate enough results to determin what is wrong with our tanks water. I dont know what in the medications you use( I live in Japan ) but is there a posibility that one of them killed the benificial bacteria in your filter when you first treated them. If so your tank will start its cycle all over again and thats were the bad water quality comes from, and that will definately bring on a second bout off finrot. If this is the case you have to go through the same process as when you bought your tanks(cycling). From what I can gather these meds are anti-bacterial so when using them you should disconect your filter and keep it running some where else, so as the benificial bacteria is not affected. Thats why I choose salt when treating fish, b/c it dose not harm the benificial bacteria.
PLEASE dont give up , there is a reason and a solution to this problem.

I am not treating them in the water in the tank. I am floating them in betta bowls in the tank in fresh clean water. I have not put ANY meds in the actual tank with the filter, so that's not the case. The tap water has 0 Nitrate. If the only reason to treat with salt is to not upset the biological filter, and meds would work better, I'd rather use the meds...

OR should I put the bettas back into their cycled tanks and treated with salt (although) there are cory cats and an oto in one, and African Dwarf Frogs in the other....

Thanks again...

I can't fing that medicine ANYWHERE!!!
I was told the company (Aquatronics) went out of business. Any other suggestions??
I feel like
I keep hitting all these roadblocks...

Ok so I am starting to get the idea of whats going on. How big are these betta bowls? Am I right in assuming that these bowls have no filtering device on them? Are you putting the meds in these bowls and changing the water? If so how much?

1st of all, Ashdavid, you ROCK!!!
Thank you so much for caring...
No filtration, just about 16 0z. betta bowls.
Everyday, I use a 2.5g empty tank to make the mixture of new clean water and meds. I use the 2.5 to be sure I am using the correct amounts. I setup one clean betta bowl and let the temp adjust to the tank and I swap out which bowl they are in every day.

I'm trying to upload a pic but it's not working :(

Even though I dont like the 100% water changes the method seems sound enough. Jmo but I would prefer to see them in there normal tank with filtration on it, the reason being that moving them everyday could be stressing them out. Try this if you want to , put them back in their tanks use the salt method and do 50% water changes everyday, if you dont see improvment in a 5-6 days you can go back to your meds. I would much prefer this method because your filter will be working with you. Also use a declorinater for your tap water. One other thing is your tap water chloramine treated? Let me know if you have any questions. :dive2:
