So I guess some of you have noticed I haven't been posting for a few days. Well the story is I had major sugery at the dentist last week which involved a bone graft. While the procedure itself wasn't so bad, the day after then those that followed to today have been nothing short of a nightmare. They did the work on my lower left quadrant and this Dr. was great. He really was despite the pain in the days that followed. They prescribed me with pain meds that was the equivelent to Tylenol Extra strength which did work for the 1st day. It was the days after that did me in. I've never felt like a sharp bladed knife was being twisted into my temple about every 5 minutes or so until the Tylenol's were gone. Today, after not getting any sleep last night and trying my best to keep my head still, I finally gave in and called the answering service. I'm usually one with a high tolerance for pain, but I cannot believe how debilitating this pain was. It would stop me in my tracks, and force my eyes shut... it was awful. Anyhoot... the answering service got in touch with my doc and he called in a higher med and I have been doing so much better since. I felt terrible for breaking up this guy's holiday weekend but I just couldn't bear takin 5 advils... it woulda been kicking the crap out of my liver so what was I to do! WHEW!! SO wit hthat, I am going to slumber tonight, hopefully to sleep so well, I wish all a good weekend even thoug it's a little late... but I wish you all well....

ouch!!!! what exactly did they do to you?

well, I had a cap on a tooth and they believed the cap was of the wrong size or done wrong from a dentist I went to before them. It was growing off the gum, allowing food and stuff to get caught underneath. The took the cap off to see if they could save the tooth under it for spacing issues I guess, and thankfully they could. The said tooth began separating from my jaw so they had to bone graft it to bring it back down or to at least reattach it to keep my teeth from spacing in the front. From what I can tell, they sliced both sides of the gum, cleaned out what they needed to from what the cap allowed under the gum for 5 years and restiched it back up... The gum and jaw didn't hurt but the shooting pain through my temple was killer.

Doll....how awful!! Bone pain is not good and they should have given you a prescription for something stronger than Tylenol from the start. Silly dentist, I know you felt bad about calling him, but that's what he gets for not thinking ahead and knowing you would be in pain. Around here they routinely give either Tylenol #3 or Vicodin after extracting wisdom teeth, and what you had was worse than that!!
Hope you start feeling more human. Is it all done or do you have to go back in for more?

And yes..I had missed you!!! :D

yes, I am feeling much better with this second batch, ol' vic's. I try not to take them but when that shooting pain starts, I'm at my knees without a choice. I have to go back on Wednesday to have the stitches removed and then have 2 more surgeries, though not with the bone grafting (thank the stars for that)! I tell you, if you ever think it'll be ok to skip the dentist for a couple of years for savings, convenience or whatever the thought... DON'T DO IT!! Make sure you keep up with it!! What a painful lesson to learn BUT, look Ma!! No cavities :D Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day.

(nursie, you are adorable!!)

I tried that once...ended up with a root canal and crown for my neglect.
Take the pain pills BEFORE it gets bad so you don't hurt so. Ewww..stitches in your mouth. Take one before you go to have them taken out.

yeah i tired kipping the dentist and six root canals and three caps and one cavity and sevral other procedures later ..i still have another root canal to go! thankfully nothing was as serious as your doll, ..its a wonder they didnt give you the disolving stiches? they just disapear when their job is done! ...and i agree they should have gave you something way stronger to send you home with! ..glad to hear you are feeling better though! and i hope everthing from here on out is pain free! :thm:

thanks judge, I appreciate that.. and know the pain of a root canal from years back too.... Well, the Dr. told me that he needs to do the surgery on 3 quad's and that just the one involved the bone graft so I'm anticipating that there won't be nearly as much pain... BUT I will let him know what this past weekend was like until I got the stronger med's... so maybe next time, I will get the better stuff even though there is no graft...... now I guess you can say if I wasn't paranoid about the pain before, I sure as heck am now...

Everyone REMEMBER: Ignore your teeth and they'll go away! ;)

Wow Doll, I'm sorry to hear that. It sounds awful. I hate the dentist, too. Really, really badly.

I hope you start feeling normal soon and that the rest of it isn't so bad. I read the majority of the thread yesterday, so I can't remember - were you awake during the procedure or did they konk you out?
