atlantic longnose sturgeon

I have never had or raised any but they are bottom feeders---so maybe some shrimp??

What are your longterm plans for this fish? I believe this species is both endangered and grows very large. Where did you acquire it?

Not endangered, but not as abundant as usual...and I too would be interested in what you plan on doing with them.

According to wikipedia, "The fish can reach sixty years of age, fifteen feet in length and over eight hundred pounds in weight."

a friend of mine works with some biologists from germany and every summer, in efforts to restock a river in germany, they catch both males and females to gather sperm and egg then they set the adults free and incubate the eggs until they hatch. Once they hatch the ship them to germany, except they had too many to ship so they gave me a few(several hundred, lol) of the extras for my birthday and set the remaining(far more than they gave me) back into their native river. Unfortunately not much is known about raising them in a small inclosure and most have them have not made it.
As for what i planned on doing with them.... I noticed on some online pet stores you can actually buy white sturgeon, which grom much larger than atlantic(assuming they are white sturgeon and no just a nickname). So I figured i could provide some fish enthusiasts with a new challenge. And if they became too large they could set them free, as sturgeon have no natural predators once they reach a certain size.
Whew, what an essay, lol, i just wanted to let people know what i was doing because i could see people getting upset if they thought i caught them from the wild or something.

Releasing fish into the wild should not be done. You could expose native stocks to an aquarium disease. Also, atlantic sturgeon in Germany? I thought they were purely NA fish...

:iagree: We have these at the Ga. Aquarium and they are Native to NA. Why are they being introduced to Germany? What organization in Germany is your friend working with?
