No, this isn't a sales pitch, and no, someone didn't hack my account and start posting spam, lmbo. I really think this is awesome and wanted to share.
My girls have been gone for a month to their father's house in VA, and they just got home yesterday. There is a new little girl in the neighborhood that moved in since they left. The three of them were playing together yesterday, when this 9 year old little girl showed my girls her cell phone and told them about www.safelinkwireless.com
I checked it out, and it turns out that it is a government funded program for lower income families to provide wireless phones. If you qualify, you get a free phone, voicemail, caller ID, and call waiting, and a certain amount of minutes each month. It isn't available in every state, but here in MI I qualified for 68 free minutes a month. If you do run out of minutes you can purchase additional minutes with a TracFone prey-pay card. Any of the free minutes that you don't use roll over to the next month.
I have wanted to get a cell for the kids for quite awhile, but it just never was in the budget. We have to pay a security deposit to add a line, like a lot of people do. So, I filled out the app, and my girls will have their phone in 5-10 business days. They know it is for emergencies only and for me to get a hold of them if they are out playing at a friend's house. It will give me some more peace of mind, for sure.
I checked and it is not yet available in all states, but there are quite a few participating. From the website:

The approval process was simple and the income requirements are pretty dang reasonable. I really urge parents or those that need an emergency phone to check this out!Alabama, Connecticut, D. of Columbia, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
