Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Red'
Care Level - Easy
Lighting: low – medium (pretty flexible)
Substrate – Any, but does better with a little bit of enriched soil or root tabs
Aquarium placement – Foreground
Growth – Moderate
Crypt Wendtii ‘Red’ is my favorite of quite a few plants listed under the Cryptocoryne Wendtii name. It is a medium sized plant originating from, and naturally found in South-East Asia, particularly in. Wendtii is well known in the aquarium plant world, and is one of the easiest crypts to take care of. It can be planted in any substrate and will typically do well, but does better when given some enriched substrate or a root tab. In my experience it does not seem to be picky about the softness or hardness of the tank water, and only seems to slow in growth when lighting is set to very low. Like most crypts, it does “melt” when under certain conditions, but can usually be brought back relatively easily by just keeping the roots planted. It reproduces via runners that come up through the substrate, and usually produces quite a few runners in a short amount of time when put in a medium light setup.
Wendtii Red differs from other Wendtii types mostly, if not only, on aesthetics. It has a beautiful reddish brown tint to the leaves, which makes it a colorful addition to most aquarium setups. I keep several of them in all of my 10g, 20g, and 50g tanks, and have thoroughly enjoyed them. This is the perfect plant for people with minimal time for plant care IMO. It’s colorful, looks like it took a lot of work, but in reality mostly does what it does all by itself. I would highly recommend it to newbies and experience aquarium keepers alike.
