We have a 55 gal. friendly community tank. During the summer there are times that we will be gone up to a week or so. We live in a somewhat remote area, and the person that we had taking care of feeding our fish while we were gone is no longer available.

Can someone reccomend an automatic feeder that they've had a good experience with? We want to make sure it is something reliable. We don't trust the cake foods that disolve over a week period and want an actual feeder so that our fish get the flake food that they're accustomed to in our absence.

The tank is really over-filtered with an Emperor and a Fluval 404. Water quality is awesome, the PH is steady at 7.1.

Thanks for any feeder advice.

I have the Nutramatic 2x feeder by Hagen. It has served quite well when I go away for a week or so. It is powered by 2 AA batteries and drops food 2 times a day. You set the amount using a sliding gate. I tend to put it on a lower setting as it feeds two times a day. My suggestion would be to set it up the day before you go away to make sure it works. It even comes with some nice food. I paid 24 dollars for mine.

TKOS, good advice.. I think that's what we have. It doses 2X a day. Yes, do test it first..

The nice thing about the cheaper Nutramatic feeder is that is has a clamp so can attach it to the edge of the tank. The only other feeder I have seen is digital, more expensive and just rests on the top. Since you only need to use these things every so often I would suggest against the more expensive machines. You won't get clogging even after 2 weeks with the cheaper on.

Mine didn't come with a manual so I was unaware exactly how it worked. I assumed it would start spinning around as soon as I put the batteries in. In fact it waits 12 hours and then spins once. Then it waits 12 hours againa and spins once more. So they are in fact very quiet until the actual feeding time.

Oh yeah. Another good thing is to test it out in a dish or somewhere not in the tank. This will give you a good idea of how much food the settings dish out. That way you can set it to a nice amount for the twice a day feedings.

That's real funny! I got a new alarm clock since I thought the older one was failing! The feeder sounded like my alarm was dying..........
