Okay this may seem trivial but what method should one use as an auto top off without a sump? Could you use an auto doser run into a 5g water jug and could this drip into the main tank. Are those auto dosing pumps strong enough to move water from beneath the tank into the main display. I would like to try something like this and mix in calcium etc into the water so that it goes in an auto top off? I don't have room to put anything above the tank......just curious how others do this????

I auto top with one of those cheapy deals. I think it was maybe $40 and consists of a small pump and a cylinder holding tank. Its pretty small but does reach up into my 90 gallon tank. You can always dose right into your bottom sump if it doesnt work but I ran my all the way to the top. Keep your lines as short as possible. If it doesn't work as good as you like raise the jug up off the ground a little using something like a stepstool. I have mine pumping from a 5 gallon jug.

this sounds lik exactly what I want. what kind of cheapy deal and what does it look like. Do you not have any fear of it siphoning back to the 5g jug? I have a 75 without a sump and I need an auto top off????

I have an Aqua-Lifter AW-20. Here is a link to a retailer that sells it (just googled it). You need the pump and the suction filter. Note this is a VERY cheap solution. I consistently have to monitor the dose amount as its merely a simple plastic valve that pinches the hose. It does work though if you don't want to spend a lot of money on a doser.
