well about 2 and a half months ago my pair of convict cichlids had babies and they are now about half an inch long and i know cichlids are very good parents but ive heard that when they are ready to breed again they will eat the fry from before is this true and if so how long does it take before the parents are ready to breed again? i would really like to keep a couple of the fry to put in a 60 gallon tank im working on gettin setup thanks for any info !!

yeay my convicts have had fry too, they have just become adventerous. I would also like to know the answer to this question. But my grow out tank isn't so big. its only another 2ft. But i read somewhere they you can take them out as soon as they are free swimming and semi independant. So maybe that helps? they will survive without the parents I am sure of it. Either way, you always have a second chance with the next set of fry ^_^ maybe is a little bit cruel.

ahh Such is life.

Years ago when I had convicts. I used to have a slab rock layed out in a corner. The eggs get layed on it. I would put a bucket in the tank and move the rock into the bucket tilt it up and take the water with it. Fill a ten with the water from that 1st tank put the bucket in the 10 turn it on its side under water and slide the rock out. No water shock and the eggs would hatch. Feed them beby food. Time whent on and I found out later that the convicts were good parent and didn't eat their yung. So I didn't do it anymore. But to answer part of your question they should be fine on their own. About when they are going to be ready again I don't remember. I want to say it was about a month later.

it can be next week... u never know with convicts!

lol - what is better the greater respect of humanity, or money? Anyways, I have made a perspex tank, and once the glue has completely dried and i've tested for leaks I am gna move the fry. It will have been approx 2 weeks since hatched. And they are doing very well, I feed blood worm and the mum takes it over to them and shoves gravel around the place to find food. which brings up next point, they will do better with their parents soley because of food. I've found the mum takes them to an area of the tank where the filter is not so strong so the food is all hidden (broken down) in the gravel. So once they get good and roaming around I will take them out, this to me, shows independance and capability.

I will prob only take 1/2 or 3/4 cause I don't want to spend hrs stressing them out trying to catch them all.
