hi, my 30 gallon tank just today finished cycling (with fish) and we have 2 balloon mollies, 5 zebra danios and 6 platies and today i noticed a tiny thing swimming around so when i went to see what it was i noticed it was a tiny black baby. i saw one of the fish chase it real quick but didnt do anything to it and as i went to grab my net to seperate the baby i lost site of him and havent seen him since (a few hours ago). whats the likelyhood that he got eaten? could he be hiding inside the pagoda we have or between one of the many plants? also we have a hang on back filter that sucks up water, could it have been sucked into that? is there any way to lure him to the top or anything? thanks.

mollies and platies will eat fry. Even the mother will eat her own if you don't separate them quickly.

There's always a chance that it's just hiding, though. Also, if you saw one, there might be more on the way (assuming the rest didn't get eaten already).

If you're interested in raising fry, you could get a breeder net to hang in the corner of your tank. Those don't seem to work as well as having a separate fry tank, though. Also, you might want to get some fry food. It's basically powdered flakes.

I've never bred fish, myself, because I don't want to deal with the hassle! ;) Not only of raising the babies, but then finding homes for them.

Good luck!

he is probably hiding but the parents do eat the fry.
other inhabitants especially do too.
i once had a group of 3 platies with a pair of mollies and one of the platies gave birth and then the mollies and platies had a feeding frenzy for a couple of minutes. only three survived, and they grew up into coral blue platies, and they looked really good. they eventually died from natural causes in May of '05
the last molly lived for a while longer... it died right before school started... the 20th of August

hey, so i found the little guy and put him in a little green catcher net and propped it up near the top. i also crushed up flake food for him but he doesnt seem to be eating. tomorrow im gonna go get him a more permanent home.

yay , hope he makes it all the way , iwould love to see pics of him as he grows , i adore watching baby fish grow :) (never bred fish of my own coz my tanks are full and my parents wont let me but im planning on breeding bettas as soon as possible :) )

I found a fry today too. The others are probably poop by now. No idea who gave birth, all but one of my livebearers are pregnant and still look it. The 1st birth was what got me hooked. Now I have MTS. At some point, I'll have to let nature take its course; I don't want a million fish ! Heh.. ;-)

i found another little guy while doing a water change today! my gf picked up a little breeder net for them as well as a couple of dwarf puffers from the fish store today. we got rid of all our cycle fish though besides the 2 mollies and 2 zebra danios but will prolly give them away too if we start to notice any aggression between the puffers and them.
