I've been away from the hobby for years and am ready to start up a 55 again now that I am a homeowner and not a renter.

I am out of the loop on technology & last recall using a biowheel, UG & in-tank skimmer on a f.o. + anemone tank. I used reef crystals and instant ocean; kept tangs, damsels, clowns, and volitans lion (at varying times, not together necessarily.)

I'd like to get going again w/ a FO tank w/ clowns, a blenny & not much else at first; later acquiring some pink/purple algae coated rock. I would pretty well like to avoid UG but I really don't know which direction to take as far as filtration because when I did attempt a biowheel / skimmer setup, things did not live. :(

I am going to do a fair amount of reading and do not expect answers on a silver platter, but if you've favourite links / threads as far as "bio filtration what's needed," post up. And I'll keep reading.

I'm starting with a standard 55 (12 x 18 x 48??) on a wood stand, a filter that says aquaclear 500 on the top plate, and seems powered by an aquaclear a-620? It was keeping a cichlid alive for the previous owner; I imagine it will need media changed out at a minimum. If it's completely useless for salt (and not even reasonably useful in a supplementary mode,) I'd appreciate knowing so.

Eventually, a small refugium underneath and an overflow setup of sorts?

That's enough off my chest for now. Back to reading.:)

I never used CC and was under the impression it was an abrasive, unsuitable-for-certain-fish substrate.

I always had dolomite. :hypnotized: I remember the LFS always telling me it was the way to keep the tank stable but I can't recall if that was in regards to ph or what.

I think I'd like a black / tan sand similar to what we see @ Coronado beach.

Hey there San Salty...Welcome to Aquaria Central..I hope you enjoy the site and all it has to offer you...

A few observations / thoughts from your post...

The Aquaclear 500 is now known as the Aquaclear 110..this filter is rated for tanks of 110 gallons, so, i dont see any issues with using this on a fish only system. You would have to replace the media and start from new though..You dont have plans to heavily stock the tank for the time being, however, maybe in the future as stock opinions change, you may concider either adding another filter, or simply replace the Aquaclear for a larger system..

There is no need at all to have a UG filter...some people go completly bare bottom on fish only tanks, or maybe just a scattering of sand to remove the edge from the glass showing through..I personaly dont see any need to have a skimmer on a FO system, dont think its neccesary..Bio-wheels i would certainly stay well away from..

No problems at all with adding a refugium / overflows etc etc further down the line. We have plenty of experience here on the marine forums and we shall all do our best to guide you through that when the time comes..

Regarding your next posts...

Crushed coral does help to balance the pH in the tank, however, it always has the potential to collect uneaten food and trap detrius. For these reasons, i do not recomend it..The best choice of sand is Aragonite sand, sugar grade size which is commonly supplied by Carribsea..A great choice of substrate..

I hope this has been of some help to you. Anymore questions or thoughts, then get a new thread started over in the marine forums and we shall all do our best to advise and help all we can..

Again, Welcome to AC!
